Berberine for diarrhea in children and adults: a systematic review and meta-analysis
Therapeutic Advances in Gastroenterology · 2020
Reviewed guidance
Clinical trials suggest berberine may improve diarrhea and shorten its duration, including acute infectious diarrhea. However, many studies were small or at risk of bias, treatments and doses varied, and much of the research in children used berberine as an enema. Overall, the evidence is promising but uncertain.
May help shorten acute diarrhea and reduce loose stools.
Do not use berberine during pregnancy or breastfeeding, or give it to infants. It can cause stomach upset, nausea, constipation or diarrhea and may interact with medicines. If you take prescription medicines, check with a clinician or pharmacist before using berberine.
Get medical care for symptoms that are severe, last longer than expected, get worse, or otherwise concern you.
Practical ways to use the ingredient may not provide the same form or amount discussed in the evidence.
