The therapeutic effects of chamomilla tincture mouthwash on oral aphthae: a randomized clinical trial
Iranian Journal of Pharmaceutical Research · 2014
Reviewed guidance
One randomized trial in oral aphthae reported improved clinical outcomes with chamomile tincture mouthwash versus control. Applicability is limited to the studied mouthwash preparation, short-term use, and minor aphthous ulcers; evidence is not transferable to creams, essential oil, or ingestion.
Short-term symptom relief for minor recurrent aphthous ulcers; evidence is specific to chamomile tincture mouthwash, not all topical chamomile products.
How to use it: Use only a commercially prepared oral chamomile mouthwash labeled for mouth use and follow its directions; do not swallow. Stop if irritation or allergy develops.
Avoid if allergic to chamomile or related daisy-family plants. Stop for mouth irritation or rash; seek care for swelling or breathing trouble. The trial reported no significant short-term adverse effects, but longer-term and product-specific safety are less certain.
Get medical care for symptoms that are severe, last longer than expected, get worse, or otherwise concern you.
Practical ways to use the ingredient may not provide the same form or amount discussed in the evidence.
