Elderberry for prevention and treatment of viral respiratory illnesses: a systematic review
Complementary Therapies in Medicine · 2019
Reviewed guidance
A systematic review found only a small number of randomized trials of elderberry for viral respiratory illnesses. Elderberry may reduce the duration or severity of cold symptoms, but the evidence is uncertain and too limited to establish a reliable benefit.
Used for relief of cold and other respiratory infection symptoms, but it is uncertain whether it helps.
Use only properly prepared elderberry products. Raw or unripe elderberries, leaves and stems contain substances that can release cyanide and may cause nausea, vomiting and severe diarrhea. Little is known about the safety of elderberry supplements during pregnancy or breastfeeding. Check with a clinician or pharmacist if you take medicines.
Get medical care for symptoms that are severe, last longer than expected, get worse, or otherwise concern you.
Practical ways to use the ingredient may not provide the same form or amount discussed in the evidence.
