Fiber Supplementation in Irritable Bowel Syndrome: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis of Randomized Controlled Trials
Journal / ScienceDirect · 2026
Reviewed guidance
A systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized trials supports a possible benefit of fiber supplementation in IBS, but results may vary by fiber type and the evidence is not specific enough to establish benefit for every psyllium product or all IBS-C symptoms.
May improve stool frequency and constipation symptoms in adults with IBS-C; evidence is for psyllium fiber, not every fiber product.
How to use it: Use a commercial psyllium product according to its label, mix each dose with the specified amount of liquid, and increase gradually to reduce gas or bloating. Do not take it dry.
Do not use psyllium if you have difficulty swallowing or possible bowel obstruction. Take it with adequate liquid; seek urgent help for chest pain, trouble swallowing or breathing, severe abdominal pain, vomiting, or inability to pass stool or gas. Ask a clinician or pharmacist about spacing it from medicines.
Get medical care for symptoms that are severe, last longer than expected, get worse, or otherwise concern you.
Practical ways to use the ingredient may not provide the same form or amount discussed in the evidence.
