Fennel
Foeniculum vulgare fruit, commonly called fennel seed, used as a culinary spice and in oral herbal medicines.
Reviewed health uses
Intestinal gas
Sweet fennel fruit has recognized traditional use for mild spasmodic digestive complaints including flatulence. This does not establish that ordinary food amounts or any fennel tea are clinically proven treatments.
Menstrual cramps
Small randomized trials and systematic reviews suggest that some oral fennel-fruit preparations may reduce pain in primary dysmenorrhea. Confidence is limited by heterogeneous products, small studies, possible publication bias, and sparse adverse-event reporting; evidence does not establish equivalent benefit for culinary fennel or tea.
