Ingredient
Peppermint Oil
Concentrated Mentha x piperita essential oil. IBS evidence is specific to oral enteric-coated capsules and must not be inherited by peppermint tea, leaf, food, aromatherapy, or topical oil.
Reviewed health uses
Irritable bowel syndrome
Enteric-coated peppermint-oil capsules may modestly improve IBS symptoms such as abdominal pain, bloating, and gas over the short term. Evidence quality is low and individual trials are mixed; long-term benefit has not been established.
Tension headache
A small randomized crossover trial found that a specific 10% peppermint-oil topical solution reduced tension-headache intensity compared with placebo. NCCIH describes the evidence as limited, so the claim remains low confidence and formulation-specific.
Bloating
Clinical trials suggest peppermint oil can improve overall symptoms in people with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), including bloating and abdominal discomfort. However, studies have used different peppermint oil preparations, the overall quality of evidence is low, and most research has studied people with IBS rather than occasional bloating on its own.
IBS-C
Enteric-coated peppermint oil (a concentrated essential-oil preparation) has randomized controlled trial evidence and meta-analyses reporting benefit versus placebo for global symptoms and abdominal pain in adults with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).
