Echinacea

Echinacea has mixed and inconsistent evidence for common-cold prevention or treatment, with no clear, reliable benefit established across studies. Echinacea is traditionally used for upper-respiratory infections, including the common cold.

Ingredients

dried echinacea root
1/2 cup
granulated sugar
1 cup
water
1 cup
strip of lemon peel (no pith)

Instructions

  1. Combine sugar and water in a small saucepan and bring to a low boil, stirring until the sugar dissolves.
  2. Remove from heat and add the dried echinacea root and optional lemon peel to the hot syrup.
  3. Cover and let the mixture steep for 20–30 minutes, tasting after 20 to judge strength.
  4. Strain the syrup through a fine mesh strainer into a clean jar; press on solids to extract liquid and discard solids.
  5. Let cool to room temperature, seal, and refrigerate. Use within 2 weeks and refrigerate within 2 hours of cooling.

Equipment: saucepan, fine mesh strainer, measuring cups, jar with lid.
